Overview

The City of Laredo made a bold move in 2019 when, after approximately 18 months of exploring Laredo food system issues with citizen advocates, the Mayor and Council unanimously voted to make food security a priority for the city. On May, 6th, 2019 the Council created the Laredo Center and Urban Agriculture and Sustainability (LCUAS), a Local Government Corporation, to begin identifying goals and performance indicators. The Laredo Center for Urban Agriculture and Sustainability (LCUAS), and the Laredo Food Policy Council (LFPC) have explored the significance of agriculture, its relationship to community equity and health, and the economic benefits and opportunities that can arise from attention to the food system. The effort has resulted in a 5 year plan which begins to build a food system that addresses its various sectors.
